Facebook Is Anti-Social?

1 Oct

Rob Ford’s article “Obsession or passtime: Is facebook the anti-social network?” is rather interesting, as it makes the claim that Facebook can cause people to become anti-social. http://www.gonzalesinquirer.com/article_f3a14930-b404-11e1-8079-001a4bcf887a.html He includes quotes from psychologist, Dawn O’Donnell, who likens excessive use of Facebook to alcohol abuse. Ford says studies have found that using Facebook too much can lead to extreme introversion. The psychologist, O’Donnell, says parents should monitor their child’s use of Facebook, and allow them to earn their time on the social network by participating in family activities. This seems like a good idea to me. The most intriguing aspect of this article is it points out that a social networking site, intended to bring people together, can actually drive them apart. This sounds counter-intuitive, but makes sense when you consider that people may be using it as a substitute for face-to-face interaction.
